🌸 About us 🌸
Folks tend to meet at a mutual’s birthday party and that’s exactly how Cristine & Maya met (thanks Jade!) We were inspired to share ways to feel connected and involved after organizing Queens-centered events with local friends. After finding themselves funemployed, they decided to join forces and put their diverse experiences in events, art, travel and food and share their love for Queens into a monthly newsletter. Thank you for reading - we’re so glad you’re here!
Maya (left) lives in Ridgewood and was raised in Woodhaven, Queens. A writer and community organizer, her favorite way to spend free time is taking in live music in tiny venues, learning about wine, and going on walks with her friends and poodle, Cookie!
Cristine (right) A Queens native, Cristine loves being immersed in the cultures of the world’s borough. She loves Farmers Market on the weekends, supporting local businesses and sweet treats from local, traditional bakeries. Cristine is passionate about tenants rights and native New Yorkers having safe and affordable housing in their city. Cristine grew up in East Elmhurst and resides in Woodside.

Cristine’s Pick of the Month
Astoria Farmers Market
Starting May 11th, Astoria will officially have its own farmers market! In partnership with 31st Avenue Open Street, locals can shop from over 20 vendors for fresh produce, seafood and other artisanal goods every second Sunday of the month until November 9, 2025.
Through GrowNYC, Queens hosts year round farmers markets in Jackson Heights, Sunnyside and Forest Hills. However, this farmers market is founded independently by Astoria couple, Mike Cruz and Leigh Lotocki, a chef and hospitality expert who wanted to connect their neighbors to farm fresh foods from the Hudson Valley, Long Island and Queens-based farmers.
For anyone who needs extra snooze time on weekends (who doesn’t), the Astoria Farmers Market runs in the afternoon from 1-5pm. Check out their Instagram for live updates @astoriafarmersmarket

Puerto Rican Herbalism Tour at the Queens Botanical Garden, Flushing
Saturday May 17th, 2-3pm
If you haven’t had the chance to visit the botanical garden in full bloom yet this Spring, I would save your visit for this tour with local Boricua herbalist, Maggie Rivera. You’ll get a chance to visit areas of the garden not usually open to visitors (!) while getting to know some of the plants that are used in Puerto Rican cuisine and herbal medicine. So next time you visit the garden you can show off your plant ID skills - without an app.

Kora Bakery
From their Woodside apartment to their first storefront, founders Kim Camara and Kevin Borja have officially opened for business! Kora, is a Filipino-inspired bakery features different kinds of pastries and of course their beloved doughnuts including signatures like their flan doughnut (Cristine’s favorite!)
According to their Instagram, they typically sell out of pastries by 11am. They’re pretty good with live Instagram updates and announce on stories when they’re sold out. Note: get there early and expect a 30-45 minute wait or longer - especially if you visit on the weekends.
Didn’t get your hands on an ube doughnut? Luckily one of the best bakeries is just a few blocks away. Masa Madre, an artisanal bakery in Sunnyside (pictured below) has a rotating menu of Mexican pastries and the best conchas in the city. Or make a stop for a jalapeno cheddar bagel at Curley’s Bagels. Either way, you won’t regret your trip to Sunnyside.

Spring Canvassing Kickoff for Zohran Mamdani for NYC!
May 10-11th, 12-3pm, Astoria Park
Zohran Mamdani, a local assemblyman in Astoria, is running for mayor to lower the cost of living for working class New Yorkers. We need a mayor who is willing to stand up for renters, immigrants, workers - so that we can all thrive in our city.
Anyone can canvass for Zohran, and it’s a pretty empowering experience that helps you meet your neighbors. There are canvasses happening this weekend across Queens, from Jamaica to Jackson Heights. You can sign up here, or reach out to Maya with any questions. There will be a park hang afterwards where you can meet canvassers across the borough! (P.S. Maya organized with Zohran in college, and yes, he’s the real deal!)
Keep Terraza 7 Open!
Ongoing, Elmhurst
Queens is full of magic, and Terraza 7 is part of that distinct alchemy of diversity, creative expression, and grassroots ethic. I remember the first time I got to experience a night at Terraza 7 - the world class musicians, funky attic space, and flowing cocktails caught me off guard - was I definitely still in Elmhurst? Like many of our friends and favorite businesses, this amazing venue is under threat of eviction. Let’s show up and show out to make sure Terraza can keep it’s doors open to the community. Donate here, and buy tickets here.
